World Book Day
Friday 3rd March saw Barnhill Community High School celebrate the importance of reading for World Book Day!
Throughout the week, posters had been put up across the school advertising the diverse literature and voices of those old and new enjoyed by members of staff to promote a key message to our pupils - that reading is key to success.
Performance artist, writer and poet, Chanje Kunda (pictured), delivered a wonderfully engaging assembly to our enthusiastic year 7 pupils who are currently enjoying timetabled Accelerated Reader library lessons to help promote fundamental literacy skills. Many of the poems she read out from her collection combined the comedic with the tragic and spoke to many of the concerns of the 21st century - the pressure to conform and the struggle to be true to ourselves. This was followed by a workshop focussed on dreams and encouraging pupils to explore the fantastically tactile world of words that produced some excellent pieces of creative writing. Students worked incredibly hard during this session, commenting that 'it was the best thing this year' and were brave enough to share their responses with the year group where they were rewarded for their efforts.
